Childhood and Youth

Joseph was born in the spring of 1993 into a London family. Details about the actor's family remain largely private. From interviews, it's clear he grew up in a comfortable, close-knit family: he has two sisters, Lizzie and Mary, and a brother Arthur.

Even in kindergarten, it was obvious the boy had serious artistic talent. He participated in all children's performances, and in school, he attended a drama studio and appeared on stage in plays.

As a teenager, Joseph dove into dramatic arts, eventually staging his own play that caught the eye of teachers at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. Quinn received an invitation to study.

Quinn later called this a stroke of luck, saying he couldn't imagine doing anything but acting. The only other job he jokingly considered? Beach manager.

Surprisingly, Quinn avoided social media for years, explaining in interviews:
I don't have FB, I used to, but I spent all my time peeping into other people's lives. I don't have an Insta [he later got one though], it seems to me that it greatly devalues the power of words. I have Twitter, but I wouldn't say that I use it for professional purposes - to «sell» myself online.

Acting Career

After graduating from drama school, Joseph followed in the footsteps of many famous British actors and dove into London's theater scene. While he loved the energy of live audiences, Joseph had bigger ambitions beyond the stage.

So at just eighteen, he made his TV debut. It was an episode of the series "Postcode", where he played a young guy named Tim.

His next big break came with a central role as Arthur Havisham in "Dickensian," the BBC series inspired by Charles Dickens' "Great Expectations." Over twenty episodes, Quinn brought depth to the troubled brother of Miss Havisham, played by Tuppence Middleton.

Quinn clearly had a knack for period pieces, landing a role as a Winterfell guard in the iconic "Game of Thrones." Though he only appeared in one episode, his sarcastic gatekeeper who challenged Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) left a lasting impression on fans.

Meanwhile, Joseph starred in the series "Howards End". In this E.M. Forster adaptation, he played Leonard Bast, a struggling bank clerk desperately trying to hide his poverty.

Quinn's next period drama was the BBC's adaptation of Victor Hugo's "Les Misérables." He played Enjolras, the passionate revolutionary leader willing to die for his beliefs. The main characters on the screen were embodied by Dominic West and Lily Collins.

Quinn then tackled a fascinating role as the future Russian Emperor Paul I in "Catherine the Great." Quinn portrayed the future emperor as both foolish and arrogant. The actor dove deep into the historical period, determined to hold his own alongside powerhouse performers Helen Mirren (Empress Catherine) and Jason Clarke (Grigory Potemkin).

In 2020, Quinn took on a completely different challenge, playing the mentally unstable Billy Knight in the BBC detective series "Strike." In the "Lethal White" episode, Quinn delivered a chilling performance as a witness who convinces detective Cormoran Strike (Tom Burke) that he saw a child's murder years earlier.

Joseph Quinn's Personal Life

While Quinn did create an Instagram account at the producers' urging, it's actually managed by his friends and fans who occasionally post new photos from shoots. The page features hardly any photos with women, and Joseph keeps his private life under wraps.

He's got plenty of female fans eager to get to know the actor better. Among them is singer Doja Cat, who reportedly asked a mutual friend whether Quinn has a girlfriend and how she could reach him.

Joseph Quinn Now

Joseph revealed he landed this role surprisingly easily: he sent in a video portraying a "Dungeons & Dragons"-obsessed schoolboy, then got a call from his agent saying he'd been cast. About the directing duo, Quinn joked:
They just handed me the role, which honestly made me suspicious. Usually there are gladiatorial battles to get into projects like this. ... They were outsiders and stayed that way. They sit quietly on set, understanding each other without words.
The shoot, featuring many famous actors including Finn Wolfhard, Jamie Campbell Bower, and Maya Hawke, had a playfully friendly atmosphere. According to Joseph, the Duffer Brothers cultivated that vibe.

The directors gave the mystical drama newcomer complete creative freedom on set, with their only note being, "You need to be faster." After the premiere, Quinn said he's really hoping to return for the Netflix show's fifth season.

Interesting Facts

  • Joseph Quinn took his "Stranger Things" role seriously. He watched several '80s films, including "The Breakfast Club." He also dove into rock bands from that era, particularly getting into Black Sabbath and Metallica. He lost weight for the role but still didn't fall in love with "Dungeons & Dragons" – the game that was everything to Eddie.
  • One of the series' most stunning scenes featured Munson battling a monster from another dimension while his character shredded guitar to Metallica's "Master of Puppets." Afterward, the single hit the Billboard charts for the first time since its 1986 release and racked up nearly 20 million streams. Quinn loves writing scripts – mostly comedy – and dreams of directing a "Lord of the Rings" remake. Joseph frequently revisits Philip Seymour Hoffman's performances, viewing him as a role model.
