Childhood and Adolescent Years

Andrew was born in California to an English mother and an American father of Jewish descent. His paternal ancestors came from Russia and Poland, and they changed the family name from "Garfinkeln" to "Garfield".

When the boy turned three, the family moved to the United Kingdom, to the town of Epsom, located in Surrey County.

As a child, Andrew wasn't thinking about an acting career – he was more interested in sports, especially gymnastics and swimming. His parents weren't in the creative industry either – the family owned a small interior design business. The business didn't take off, so his father became a swimming coach while his mother found work as a kindergarten teacher.

Andrew has an older brother who became a doctor. His parents wanted their younger son to go into business. He received his secondary education at the prestigious London-based Freemen's School with a classic educational program. However, the school's educators encouraged creativity, so it's no surprise that Andrew joined the drama club at 15.

Then came studying at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London, which Andrew successfully graduated from in 2004. This marked the beginning of his professional theatre career. Critics gave his first stage roles a warm reception and awarded him the title of "Outstanding Newcomer" in 2005.

Around the same time, Andrew made his television debut, starring in the comedy series "Sugar Rush", which won an Emmy Award and was a good start for his further film career.

Acting Career

In 2007, Garfield landed roles in two major feature films. First up was Robert Redford's anti-war drama "Lions for Lambs," where he played student Todd Hayes alongside A-listers Tom Cruise and Meryl Streep.

In John Crowley's crime drama "Boy A," Garfield scored the lead role and snagged a BAFTA for Best Actor. The film follows a 24-year-old ex-convict struggling to rebuild his life after prison, and it took home a special prize at the Berlin Film Festival.

Another standout role came as Francis Weston in the period drama "The Other Boleyn Girl." The film had a successful worldwide release, grossing about 78 million dollars. Sure, audiences were there for Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson, and Andrew's part was small, but hey – it was all valuable experience.

Andrew's next big-screen appearance was as a traveling circus performer in Terry Gilliam's fantasy "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus" – the film tragically marked by Heath Ledger's death during production. Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell famously stepped in to complete Ledger's Tony Shepard character. Andrew took on the role of Anton, a young man in Doctor Parnassus's entourage.

2010 proved to be a breakout year for Garfield – he earned a British Independent Film Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor in Mark Romanek's "Never Let Me Go."

But the real game-changer was David Fincher's "The Social Network," which earned Garfield serious critical acclaim and multiple prestigious awards. Andrew played Eduardo Saverin, Mark Zuckerberg's former best friend turned bitter enemy in the explosive battle over Facebook's ownership.

Still, landing Spider-Man in the 2012 Marvel reboot became the defining moment of his career. After seeing Andrew's work in "The Social Network," filmmakers knew they'd found their perfect replacement for Tobey Maguire, who'd had a messy split with the producers. As for Andrew? He couldn't believe it when he got the audition call, and when he officially landed the role, he cried tears of joy and promptly got hammered.

Playing Peter Parker proved to be quite the challenge. Nobody warned him just how brutal that iconic Spider-Man suit would be to wear. He had to pull off demanding stunts that couldn't always be handed off to doubles. But best of all? He found love on set with co-star Emma Stone.

After "The Amazing Spider-Man" hit theaters, Andrew Garfield became a household name worldwide. But he didn't stick with the blockbuster superhero persona for long. In January 2017, Andrew scored a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a Drama for Mel Gibson's "Hacksaw Ridge", which was also a serious Oscar contender. His character, army medic Desmond Doss, refused to kill enemies.

Early 2017 saw the release of Martin Scorsese's "Silence," where Andrew took on the challenging role of a Jesuit monk. Prepping for the role was brutal – the actor had to shed 40 pounds to convincingly portray a persecuted martyr.

2018 brought the thriller "Under the Silver Lake," with Andrew taking on one of the lead roles. The mystery about a girl's disappearance and a sprawling conspiracy also featured Riley Keough and Topher Grace.

In 2020, Andrew worked on "Mainstream," exploring how anonymous internet users rocket to online stardom. Alongside him in the movie were Maya Hawke and Nat Wolff. Both filming and the premiere got pushed back due to the pandemic, landing in 2021 instead.
That same year, Garfield was set to star in "The Eyes of Tammy Faye" with Jessica Chastain, plus the mini-series Brideshead Revisited alongside Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara. Andrew was also given one of the main roles in the movie "Tick, Tick... Boom!", in which he stars alongside Vanessa Hudgens.

Andrew Garfield's Personal Life

Andrew met Emma Stone in 2011 during casting for the blockbuster "The Amazing Spider-Man" and sparks flew instantly. Their on-screen romance quickly blossomed into real-life passion. Andrew quickly ended things with his then-girlfriend, actress Shannon Woodward, while Emma was single at the time. In the spring of 2013, they bought a cozy apartment in New York and started living together.

But their packed filming schedules kept them apart more often than not. They saw each other more at red carpet events than at home. Early 2015 brought wedding rumors for the star couple, but by summer they'd surprisingly decided to take a break. They were spotted together occasionally after that, but wedding talk had ended. At recent Oscar and Golden Globe ceremonies, they've attended separately.

In July 2019, Andrew entered a new relationship. This time, he chose someone outside showbiz – falling for 25-year-old medical student Christine Gabel. The couple was frequently spotted on walks and nights out with friends, though the relationship's outcome remains unclear.

Andrew then began dating Alyssa Miller, and things looked serious enough for marriage talk, but his demanding schedule led to their breakup in April 2022. Since then, he's been linked to British actress Phoebe Dynevor.

In April of that year, Andrew announced he was taking a break from acting and wasn't sure if he'd ever return. For now, he just wants to live like an ordinary person. Fans speculated he made this decision after breaking up with his girlfriend, who was reportedly unhappy with how much time Andrew spent on set.

However, the break didn't last long. By July of that year, it was revealed that Garfield would produce and star in a biographical drama about Virgin Group founder and billionaire Richard Branson. He also appeared in 2022's true crime miniseries "Under the Banner of Heaven." He played detective Jeb Pyre, investigating the murders of Mormons Erika and Brenda Lafferty.

At the 95th Academy Awards, the actor teamed up with British actress Florence Pugh to present the "Best Original Screenplay" and "Best Adapted Screenplay" awards. Audiences loved the duo, and soon after, both were cast as leads in John Crowley's film "We Live in Time." Filming began in April 2023.
